Off-road ATV driving is an exhilarating outdoor activity, but a little preparation goes a long way to ensure you have a comfortable and safe ride. If you're booking our Sóc Sơn ATV Escape, here's everything you need to know to prepare like a seasoned off-roader.
1. Choose the Right Footwear (Mandatory)
This is the most important rule. You will be operating foot pedals (throttle and brake) on uneven, sometimes muddy terrain. Sandals, flip-flops, or high heels are strictly prohibited. Wear comfortable running shoes, trainers, or hiking boots with good grip. Your shoes will get dusty and potentially muddy, so don't wear your brand new white sneakers! Sturdy shoes protect your feet from any flying debris, hot engine parts, and give you proper leverage on the controls when descending steep slopes.
2. Dress for Dust and Mud: Ditch the Fancy Clothes
Our ATVs are open-sided for maximum visibility and breeze. As you steer through winding dirt tracks, you will kick up some dust, and if it has rained, some mud. We recommend:
- Wearing dark-colored clothing (long pants are preferred to protect your legs from engine heat, exhaust pipes, and low brush wood).
- Bringing a complete change of clothes, wet wipes, and a towel for after the ride. We have a changing area at the base camp.
- Wearing sunglasses to protect your eyes from dust, wind, flying insects, and sun glare.
- Bringing a bandana or face mask to breathe comfortably if the trail gets dry and dusty.
3. Understand the ATV Driving Dynamics
ATVs steer differently than standard cars. They have a wider stance, lower center of gravity, and responsive handlebar steering. During the 15-minute briefing, pay close attention to the instructions on how to handle descents, slopes, and rocky trails safely. Lean your body weight into turns to keep the vehicle balanced, and lean forward when going uphill to maintain traction on the front wheels. When descending, sit back and apply both hand brakes evenly—never slam on the front brake alone, as it can cause the vehicle to skid. If you prefer a gentler driving adventure within the city streets, check out the Hanoi Electric Scooter Tour.
4. Respect the Convoy Order
This is not a race track. Our tours follow a strict convoy system led by a professional guide. Keep a safe distance of at least 5 meters from the vehicle in front of you. Never attempt to overtake other riders or perform stunts. Safety is our priority, and following the guide ensures everyone has a fun, injury-free adventure. The sweep guide brings up the rear to ensure no one is left behind and provides mechanical support if a vehicle gets stuck.
5. Weather Planning: Rainy Day Mud vs. Sunny Day Dust
We ride in both rain and shine! If it's a sunny day, expect dusty trails and high visibility, offering incredible views of the Sóc Sơn valleys. If it rains, the tracks turn into a thrilling mud course, which many riders actually prefer for the extra challenge. Sliding through mud pools and negotiating slippery slopes adds a raw element of fun. We provide rain ponchos if it pours, but we recommend embracing the elements—mud washing off is part of the off-road fun!
6. Physical Preparedness and Health Guidelines
Steering an ATV through rocky terrain can be a workout for your arms and shoulders. While no extreme strength is required, you should be prepared for a bumpy ride. If you have chronic back pain, joint issues, or are pregnant, we do not recommend this tour. Be sure to stay hydrated during the tour; our guides carry bottled water, and we take regular breaks under the pine shade to rest our arms and enjoy the views.
7. What NOT to Bring
Leave valuable jewelry, passports, and large sums of cash at your hotel. Do not bring expensive camera gear unless you have a dust-proof and shock-proof bag for it. The vibrations on the ATV trails can be intense, and we cannot be responsible for items dropped along the forest tracks. A smartphone with a secure wrist strap or a chest-mounted action camera is the best way to capture your ride.
